The Ultimate Fighting Championship or UFC is also known under the name of cage fighting. The place where the fighters meet for combat is an octagon-shaped fenced area called the cage. This central area is four feet higher than the ground level for improved visibility during the matches. The very name of cage fighting sounds savage, barbaric and really violent, but these epithets best describe this sport in its emerging stages. Cage fighting is specific to mixed martial arts, a full contact combat sport that combines various forms of martial arts mainly relying on striking and grappling techniques.

Cage fighting changed a lot in terms of fighters’ safety after the official organization imposed some rules and regulations meant to reduce the number of injuries and give this sport recognition. The apparel has changed too for cage fighting. Tight shorts and boxing trunks used to be very popular, and the same thing can be said about singlets and long pants. Nevertheless, things have changed and only approved shorts are now allowed for cage fighting. There are no more shirts, gis and long pants. No shoes still remains a major rule that has run since the very beginning.

As for victory in cage fighting, the end of the match is at the decision of a board of judges. There can be a knockout, a technical victory for the most strikes and points accumulated in the lapsed time, stoppage because of injury or submission. Foul or illegal actions cause disqualification and the other fighter wins. As for the female presence, there are very few women in cage fighting. On the average, the sport seems exclusive and targeting males in particular.

Cage fighting is presently a very hot topic that you’ll come across on the Internet. There are thousands of YouTube videos with cage fighting matches, and there are very numerous web pages that teach techniques, tactics and training methods for anyone who wants to take up mixed martial arts. Professionals and amateurs alike compete in matches, but not all combats have a legal background. Sports bets are also closely connected with mixed martial arts, and cage fighting scenes are the location for very intense betting.
