Joe Lozito is the man who helped New York Police catch a suspect accused of murdering four people during a stabbing spree. The longtime MMA fan used a double leg takedown against a knife wielding Maksim Gelman and kept him pinned on the ground till the authorities could arrive. There are techniques from Mixed Martial Arts that can be applied in self-defense situations against knife attacks. Chicago MMA’s LJ Tabano talked with Paul Sharp from Sharp’s Martial Arts in Elgin about some of those applications. Sharp, a member of the Elgin SWAT Team, has fought in Chicago area MMA shows and has also used MMA techniques to deal with situations he’s faced in real life against bladed weapons. Dave Sharp helps Paul demonstrate some of those moves. For more information on Mixed Martial Arts in the Chicago area head to ChicagosMMA.com.

    @ballinupcrazy stereotypes aren’t just given to Americans. Tons of Americans stereotype English people, Mexicans.. Ect. It’s just something every ignorant person does, not to say all people do though.

  7. ballinupcrazy says:

    @crackfug non-americans always assume the stereotypes about americans are true thats the sad part about non-americans:) okay just playing but seriously i dislike when people put use others like the regimelife as an example for all americans

    @TheRegimelife less than 20% of the american population owns a gun, thats defenetly not everyone, not even close

  19. TheRegimelife says:

    Nice moves and techniques….but this is the 21st century and everyone has a Gun…it’s like a condom when you are at a club or strip joint……NEVER get caught without one.

  20. Scrazy0wnz says:

    @Livenderrr As Forest Griffen says in his book “Got Fight” “Wash Your Balls!”

  21. 90polly90 says:

    there is one mistake on this video – when you give the opponent his hand on his chest, you dont hold his second hand. So in real figt, he would pull his right hand back and escape….you have to hold his both hands!

  22. BeatRider44 says:

    i always tap ppl with triangle. i am god.

  23. multipastilan says:

    @abigef and Livenderrr…this two are dickheads….ahahahahahha!

  25. dmannammd says:

    @Abgef It’s not defense. It’s a submission attempt. Offense, from a previously defensive position.

  27. SkemeKOS says:

    @xanderfire

    This video is free so stop whining.

  28. SkemeKOS says:

    @DaBlindKungFuMastuh

    That would be one of the “best case” scenarios! This video is teaching what to do in one of the worst case scenarios(already been stabbed)

  29. TheMemphisSaint says:

    I’ve been teaching traditional and self defense styles for fifteen years now. Krav Maga is the most effective that I’ve run across for teaching just anybody self defense. It is very effective and efficient both in application and for training.

  30. TheMemphisSaint says:

    @markmwilson22- how are you going to say that Krav doesn’t teach you how to fight on the street? That’s all Krav does. That’s it’s sole purpose. That is why it is the number one reality based self defense system. It doesn’t have that status because of its techniques, necessarily, because a technique is just another technique; it has that status because of its training aproach. You obviously have never trained in Krav. I highly suggest you go try some classes before disregarding it.

  31. markmwilson22 says:

    Wow, well that was a refreshing perspective.

  32. markmwilson22 says:

    @greenpinkyellow Not really most karate schools have lost site of what works in real life by holding on to archaic traditions. Systems like krave are great yet they don’t allow you to truly train as you would fight because frankly, I’m not going to kick my sparring partner in the groin, and I’m not going to eye gouge him or her either. I’d rather become reactionary with punches and kicks and if I need to eye gouge someone then fine I’ll poke them in the eyes…very hard.

  33. markmwilson22 says:

    @DaBlindKungFuMastuh @DaBlindKungFuMastuh step1 is negated because both NYC and Chicago will not allow you to legally carry a firearm. (NYC has a prohibitive gun ownership process) Also don’t count on being able to carry one in DC either. It’s amazing how some of our cities that are known for violence have the strictest gun laws.

  34. DaBlindKungFuMastuh says:

    Step 1: Have a Gun

  35. greenpinkyellow says:

    Is it funny that he’s teaching MMA fighters how to fight for the street? I like MMA, but this really speaks to the difference between sport and defense.

  36. xanderfire says:

    What a joke learning knife “defence” from a video…then trying to use the MMA popularity and name to sell it.

  37. thepinktalk says:

    use the arm drag, use the chest for hurt the elbow using all the weight in a very focused, fast and explosive leverage.

  38. thepinktalk says:

    great, best wishes!

  39. Meixafuhellzman2 says:

    @H3MetalC0rE Hi
    I know allot about knife combat, if your unarmed and are against someone with 2 knives you are fucked.
    Unless you can knock him out by a quick punch to the face in some way, although most people don’t know how to use 2 knives at once, so that’s an upside, you’ll have to be agile and play very “back off” type of tactics, always try and avoid his attacks, and generally speaking, Get the hell out of there!!

  40. H3MetalC0rE says:

    What if he has two knives ?

  41. FIGHTCLIPS says:

    Great stuff. Easy to learn and practical to apply rather than some movie style disarm technique which will most likely just turn you into another victim.

  42. melo15813 says:

    This is bullshit this big gorilla motherfucker knows if somebody pulled a knife on him he would run after throwing a couple knees he would would there ass to death or take the knife from them and cut there throat with it

  43. redromd says:

    Holy @#$@ !!!

    Thank you for pointing out the truth so many times throughout the video…

    “Worst case scenario”, “I want to get away from this guy!”, “You will get cut”, “The best thing you can do is just run away”, “…only if you cannot run away.”

    Many idiots tell people to run in there and do something. This is one of the few videos that tells you to run away first. That advice alone gives this presentation more credit than any other knife defense I’ve seen in a long time. Thank you!

  44. jamespohh says:

    These techniques are found in jujutsu, aikido, judo, etc. Not exclusively “MMA” techniques, as MMA is just a sport made up of such styles. Nevertheless, this is the correct way of dealing with a knife, NOT double-legging someone.

  45. MDTSLLC says:

    Outstanding information, great vid.
